The Europa League 2020 with Leverkusen and Hoffenheim
Europa League betting – The group stage of the Europa League is usually ploughed by three German teams – but this year VfL Wolfsburg failed to qualify. So only Bayer 04 Leverkusen and TSG Hoffenheim remain, who have to face Nice and Red Star Belgrade on matchday 1. Do the clubs achieve the opening victory they had hoped for?

For Bayer Leverkusen, the Europa League is nothing more than a consolation prize: In view of the third most expensive squad in the Bundesliga and overall weak competition, they should have finished in the top 4 last year – but local rivals Gladbach of all places came before the team and banned the Werkself to fifth.
As a result, Leverkusen not only missed several million but also perhaps the only arguments for top star Kai Havetz to stay. The exceptional talent joined Chelsea for (up to) 80 million euros, where he naturally competes in the Champions League.
Bayer does not seem to have really recovered from this farewell and the generally sobering end of the preseason. In the league, the team needed four game days before they achieved their first victory – and even these three points resulted from an at best moderate performance against the crisis troop from Mainz (1-0).
On the first three matchdays, Bayer drew from the competition, and that with well-known opponents: The 1-1 draw against RB Leipzig can also be considered a success, after all, they played decent football against the current leaders and earned the point honestly.
Nevertheless, it is clear: Leverkusen cannot allow themselves such a leisurely start in the Europa League. In a group with Hapoel Beer Sheva, Slavia Prague and OGC Nice, the team does not seem at risk – but this competition has already produced many strange scenarios.
In the run-up to the group stage, Nice is probably Leverkusen’s main competitor for first place. Last year, the team finished fifth in French Ligue 1 and is currently fourth after seven match days. With a good mix of internationally experienced players and young talents, the team is symbolic of a respectable Europa League competitor. With Kasper Dolberg (23), Jeff Reine-Adelaide (22) and Amine Gouiri (20) there are even three highly talented offensive forces in the squad who would probably also have a right to exist in the Leverkusen ranks.
But someone else should make the Bundesliga fans smile and heart-pounding: ex-Bayern star Dante. At 37 years of age, the Brazilian is still the undisputed boss in Nice’s defence – and currently, he’s even the second-best goalscorer on his team (2 goals)! A lot should depend on Dante’s performance and leadership against Leverkusen.
The bottom line is that we expect a Europa League game at a good level, in which the hosts from Leverkusen will set the tone. Not only because of the home advantage but above all because of the individual advantages. Although Patrik Schick and Florian Wirtz are missing two important offensive forces, coach Peter Bosz clearly has better options. After the result knot burst against Mainz at the weekend, the Werkself could start a small series on Thursday!

TSG Hoffenheim has established itself in the top third of the Bundesliga. Last season they deservedly qualified for the Europa League. Can you do more this year?
In any case, the Bundesliga start gave hope. Under new coach Sebastien Hoeneß, TSG achieved two wins, one of which can be considered historic: Hoffenheim beat the triple winner Bayern Munich 4-1 on matchday two. You never won higher against the record champions – and FCB only lost ten times in almost 60 years of Bundesliga history.
Since then, however, the team has cooled noticeably: First, they lost 1: 2 to Eintracht Frankfurt, then they were also inferior to Dortmund’s Borussia (0: 1). Both games pushed TSG back down to earth – but one single player still seems to be flying: Andre Kramaric. The Croatian striker scored six of the eight Hoffenheim league goals and only has to give priority to Robert Lewandowski (7). It is all the more bitter that Kramaric tested positive for the coronavirus before the game against BVB and has been in quarantine since then.
The team celebrates the first matchday of the Europa League as a clear favourite: Red Star Belgrade has a rich tradition and has dominated the Serbian league for decades – but the quality of the squad is manageable even by Europa League standards. For comparison: Hoffenheim’s team comes to a total value of around 220 million euros. Red Star Belgrade is just 45 million.
We, therefore, expect a dominant appearance from the strong Kraichgauer, who meanwhile also have the necessary breadth for a packed schedule. The absence of Kramaric will be noticeable again, but less so than against Dortmund. Anything but a straightforward matter would surprise us on Thursday evening.
